Bottlenose Dolphin

The bottlenose dolphin is probably the most common type of dolphin, and the one most people think of. It is also the most likely one to see at a dolphinarium and can be found throughout the world. They generally live along the coastline, but there are also some that live offshore in the ocean.

They may be the most common in dolphinariums because they are reported to be the easiest type of dolphin to train, and show eagerness to do so.

Although in reports of wild swims they seem more cautious and may not approach humans readily, which is different from spinner dolphins. Those types seem curious and are reported to come up to humans in wild swims, although are opposite of the bottlenose in dolphinariums. In these centers spinners are not kept because they are very difficult to train.

So the bottlenose is very common for multiple reasons, and if you haven't read about dolphins, may not even know other types exist.

Recent research studies have identified two types including the "Common" and the "Indo-Pacific".

As you can see they are generally a grey color from light to dark grey.

Their rostrum (which looks like a nose) is where it gets its name. It kind of looks like a bottle because
of its round features and length. But in fact this forms its mouth, and it breathes through its blow-
hole located on top of its head.
