What do dolphins eat?

Have you ever wondered "What do dolphins eat?"

Most wild dolphins eat plankton and small fish. When I took care of and fed dolphins they ate fish like mackerel and herring, but also liked squid.

Here are 5 ways dolphins eat food:

Dolphins use herding by swimming along in the ocean and eating the fish at the same time, by working together.

If they do this technique by making fish go into shallow water, then are using corralling.

Another way they can get food to eat is by using their echolocation to stun a fish, which shocks it.

They can also whack a fish with their tail, which slows it down for them to catch and eat it.

Finally, they can forage along the bottom of the ocean too.

In dolphinariums, most will eat some type of fish, and will sometimes get extra vitamins placed in the fish. I remember this was a very smelly process, the vitamins smelled and the fish smelled, but the dolphins loved it! Although the vitamins usually needed to be hidden or else they thought something was wrong with their fish and wouldn't eat it. That meant pushing the vitamins way into the gills until you couldn't see them anymore. Yum-Yum! Have you taken your vitamin today?

How much do dolphins eat?

On average, they will eat between 10 Kg to 25 Kg of fish daily. This is an average and can depend on species and weight. For a dolphin weighing 200 Kg to 250 Kg, this amount of food would be enough.
